Old Emery Tavern

Located in Biddeford, Maine

The Benapeag Chapter NSDAR placed a bronze marker on a boulder to show the location of Old Emery Tavern. The marker was placed on October 18, 1926, and reads as follows:

“SITE OF TAVERN AT WHICH IN
1797 LOUIS PHILLIPE, KING OF
FRANCE, ACCOMPANIED BY HIS TWO
BROTHERS, THE DUKE de MONTPENSIEN
AND COMTE de BEAUJOLAIS, AND
TALLEYRAND, AFTERWARDS THE NOTED
FRENCH DIPLOMAT, STOPPED ON
THEIR WAY FROM PORTSMOUTH, N.H.
TO PORTLAND, MAINE.
LAFAYETTE STOPPED HERE IN
1825.
