Molly Ockett Chapter, NSDAR

Molly Ockett Chapter, National Society Daughters of the American Revolution (NSDAR or DAR) is located in Bridgton, Cumberland County, Maine, halfway between North Conway, New Hampshire, and Portland, Maine. Molly Ockett Chapter, NSDAR, was organized on October 24, 2020. We are the second DAR chapter in Maine named Molly Ockett. The original Molly Ockett Chapter, NSDAR, was organized in 1976 in Fryeburg, Maine, but regrettably disbanded in 2017. The new chapter is very honored to carry forward the memory Molly Ockett, a remarkable native woman of the area.

Who We Are

Every member of our chapter has proven her lineage back to a Patriot of the American Revolution. As a group, we are committed to promoting historic preservation, education, and patriotism in the Lake Region. Our chapter is made up of enthusiastic women of all ages, backgrounds, and talents. We would love to have you join us! Won’t you consider coming to one of our meetings? Our chapter regent can provide you the time and date.

Membership in the DAR is very rewarding. It provides an opportunity to serve our community while building bonds of friendship with like-minded women. To become a member, a woman must be at least 18 years old and be able to prove blood descent from a person who rendered patriotic service during the American Revolution. If you think you are eligible, come to one of our meetings or contact us. The chapter will help you document your lineage. You can read more about membership requirements here.

What We Do

Since its founding in 1890, historic preservation has always been one of the key pillars of the DAR mission. DAR members participate in a wide variety of historic preservation projects because these projects are crucial for preserving American history for future generations. Locally, Molly Ockett Chapter, NSDAR, is committed to preserving the numerous old cemeteries in the Lake Region. Our chapter is currently participating in the effort to clean and preserve the gravestones in the Naples Village Cemetery.

The DAR is passionate about educating America’s youth and supports a variety of different programs, contests, and awards to help further this goal. DAR offers many different resources that teachers may find useful when they are teaching subjects such as the Revolutionary War, family history/genealogy, the colonial period, and early America.  Our chapter donates supplies to local schools annually and presents DAR Good Citizen awards to area high schools students who demonstrate the qualities of dependability, leadership, service, and patriotism.

For 125 years, the Daughters of the American Revolution has carried the torch of patriotism. Love of country fills the heart of every Daughter. Her love of America is reflected in her assistance and support to all who serve our great country, particularly our nation’s active-duty military and veterans, and to all those in need in her community. Molly Ockett Chapter, NSDAR, supports veterans at Maine Veterans’ Home in South Paris and Togus VA Medical Center with donations of lap blankets, personal items, activity books, and other needed items.

Become a Daughter!

When you join the DAR, you become part of a nationwide network of more than 185,000 women who form lifelong bonds of service and friendship, honor their revolutionary ancestors, and promote historic preservation, education, and patriotism in their communities. The work of the DAR to assist students, to celebrate American history, to honor those who wear (or have worn) the uniform of our nation, to welcome new citizens, to conserve natural resources, and to perform other acts of community service has never been more necessary.

We perpetuate the memory and spirit of the men and women who achieved American independence because their struggles and sacrifices, and those of the intervening generations, have secured for us the blessings of liberty and freedom. It is our responsibility to help others understand the importance of preserving this hard-won freedom for future generations. Please join us in this important work.

We have talented women ready to help you with your application and the research to prove your lineage, and help you become a Daughter of the American Revolution.
